Shuttle STS-107 Air/Ground Recorded Comms
Columbia's Last Ride

On 1/16/03 EST Space Shuttle Columbia STS-107 launches from the Kennedy Space Center. I had decided to leave a scanner at my radio shack in Daytona Beach, FL locked on 259.7000 MHz which is the Shuttle Air/Ground frequency used in the first few minutes of launch. Note, this frequency is also used once the shuttle enters earth's atmosphere for landing. While the scanner was locked on 259.7000 the audio out from the scanner was being digitally recorded on one of my computers. You can hear not only the shuttle but you could hear Houston's first radio call "Houston Endeavour, go at throttle up".

Normally I also record the landing comms. However at 9AM EST on 2/1/03 just 16 minutes before landing, moments before I normally can receive direct Shuttle Comms, Columbia broke up over Texas. Never to be heard from again.

The software used to record the audio is a VOX recorder which means it only records voice, not the silence between radio calls. This was recorded using a Uniden BC 780XLT scanner and the Create Log Periodic antenna.

WARNING: You may not link directly to the wav file. You may link to our website however not directly to the file. We have already moved it once because of people linking directly to the file thereby bypassing the website. 1)That is an illegal practice and 2) if it continues I will record over the wave file with very Vulgar language which will cause the people who HIT YOUR LINK to get pretty pissed off at you.
